The Leesfield Family Foundation is pleased to announce that Brenda Kathurima is the 2014 recipient of the Leesfield/AAJ Law Student Scholarship.
The scholarship has been awarded every year since 1994, recognizing law students who exemplify a high commitment to trial advocacy and public justice. Born in Kenya and fluent in Swahili, Brenda is the 23rd recipient of this scholarship, having graduated Summa Cum Laude from Coppin State University in Baltimore, Maryland as an Honors College Eagle Scholar. She is a first-year law student at The University of Maryland, Francis King Carey School of Law and expects to graduate in 2016. Ira Leesfield presented the scholarship to Ms. Kathurima on July 27, 2014 during the American Association for Justice Annual Convention held in Baltimore, Maryland. Brenda’s desire to become a lawyer is fueled by her experiences growing up in a society devoid of the rule of law and civil justice. She is a dedicated law student with a passion to contribute to the well-being of her community and has undertaken numerous projects to assist the less fortunate, such as her significant role in the implementation of a laptop award program for underprivileged students while she served as Secretary of the Student Government Association at Coppin State University. She hopes to embark on a legal career with emphasis on civil rights litigation, and be a “voice of conscience” for the most vulnerable members of society. “I am honored to be the recipient of this prestigious award from such esteemed organizations. As a student paying for my own college education, I cannot express what this award means to me. . .Your support is what makes my future a real possibility, and for this, I am deeply grateful, ” said Brenda Kathurima. We proudly congratulate Brenda Kathurima for her remarkable accomplishments.
